VIP Opening for Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018

At Turtle Bay Exploration Park, we are honored to bring culture, history, science, and art to the residents of Shasta County and visiting guests from around the world. Each exhibition is unique in its own way and holds an educational component for guests to learn new perspectives and step into the shoes of artists, geographers, and theorists.

There are many momentous events that we have had the chance to host at Turtle Bay. This past Friday, January 20, we held a special VIP Opening for our newest traveling exhibition, Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018. The Museum was flooded with community members, military, veterans, volunteers, and other individuals eager to see the new artwork on display in Turtle Bay’s Exploration Hall.

Beginning with the presentation of colors by the Shasta Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the VIP Opening featured speakers from Turtle Bay, including Michael Warren, Julia Cronin, and Joanne Crosetti. Guests were also touched by the words of Charlie Grow, one of the Marine artists of the exhibition. Charlie Grow was enthusiastic about his pieces in Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018, and spoke with many guests about his artistic motivation and techniques.

The Korn family, also in attendance, had the first viewing of their mother, Jane Korn’s featured display with World War II Marine Corps Women's Reserve artifacts from Turtle Bay’s Collections in Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018. The family, including relatives and friends from near and far, shared many special moments together during the VIP Opening.

Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018, is a traveling exhibition from the National Museum of the Marine Corps sponsored by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The collection comprises 9,000 works; 36 pieces are featured in the traveling art collection located at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. The admirable works share stories of bravery and sacrifice from the Marines themselves, who documented their experiences in times of war and peace.
