Western Toad

Class: Amphibian

Family: True Toad

Range:  Western British Columbia and Southern Alaska, through Washington and Oregon, to Northern California and Mexico, east to Montana, Wyoming and Nevada.

Habitat: Marshes, streams, meadows, woodlands, and forests.

Diet: Bees, beetles, ants, and other insects

Lifespan:  8 to 12 years.


Fun Facts

  • Western Toad’s breeding period takes place from February to April but can extend all the way to July.

  • Baby Western Toads are called tadpoles!

  • The Western Toad defends itself from predators by secreting an irritating fluid from glands in their backs and the back of their eyes.
