New! Sudden and Solitary

Mount Shasta And Its Artistic Legacy 1841-2008Sudden and Solitary

Turtle Bay is proud to publish a celebration of the art inspired by one of the great icons of the California landscape—Mount Shasta.  Sudden and Solitary: Mount Shasta and Its Artistic Legacy 1841-2008 is co-authored by Mount Shasta historian William C. Miesse and Robyn G. Peterson, Ph.D., Turtle Bay’s former Senior Director of Exhibitions and Programs.

For nearly 170 years, Mount Shasta has inspired excellence in art, from the drawings of the earliest Euro-American explorers in the region to the varied work of the 21st century.  Never before has there been a comprehensive examination of this entire body of work.

As Miesse writes, “Mount Shasta was in a class by itself as an image signifying early California.  …The awe-inspiring majesty of Mount Shasta has left its mark on every visiting artist and writer throughout the 165 years of its recorded art history.” The grandeur of that artistic legacy is reflected in our exquisite publication, which is available in The Museum Store at Turtle Bay.  Published in collaboration with Heyday Books in Berkeley, the soft-cover publication retails for $35. Hardcover copies of the book are available in very limited supplies for $50.

Our gratitude to the following donors whose generosity made this historic publication possible: The McConnell Foundation; Redding Rancheria; Shasta Regional Community Foundation; The City of Mt. Shasta; Red River Forests Partnership; Missy McArthur; Jeannie & Lyle Tullis; Fruit Growers Supply Company, Inc.; Black Bear Diner, and MAC Publishing.
